FIRE DEPARTMENT HISTORY

Boonville Fire Department was established on November 6, 1896. The original fire station was located on Main Street, behind the current Yesterdaze Restaurant. The station housed a team of horses and a fire wagon. BFD was responsible for protecting the City of Boonville and Boon Township. BFD moved to the old water department building on South 4th Street in the early 1900's, which is still the location of the  department today. The Fire Chief and his family lived above the station, where 2 firefighters were always on duty to answer emergency calls. Prior to all of today's safety requirements, it was not uncommon for only 1 firefighter to respond with a truck for a residential fire in the Township. The reason being, they always left someone at the station to handle any calls that might occur in the City. Once on scene, the lone firefighter would call for additional help if needed and begin fighting the fire until help arrived. Since that time, Boonville Fire Department has advanced tremendously in many capacities.

The current fire station was renovated and additions were built in 2002 to accommodate a larger work force and more fire apparatus and equipment. Currently, BFD is a combination department, which consists of 14 Career Firefighters and 10 Volunteer Firefighters. There are 3 separate shifts, with 4 firefighters per shift that work a 24 hour rotating schedule. The Chief and Assistant Chief both work Monday-Friday and respond to calls from off-duty status. Off-duty crews and volunteers are called back to work in the event of a large incident, such as a fire.

Boonville Firefighters belong to the International Association of Firefighters, the Professional Firefighters Union of Indiana and are members of Boonville Firefighters Local 4850. We currently provide fire protection, emergency medical response, hazardous materials response, water rescue and fire prevention and inspection services to an area of 89 square miles, including the City of Boonville and Boon Township. BFD responds to approximately 1000 emergency calls per year. Our firefighters are always ready to respond to any emergency and provide prompt, professional, courteous service to the citizens and visitors of Boonville and Boon Township, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week..
